I work exclusively as a maker of new violins, violas and cellos, in the modern, baroque and transitional set ups.
I have been making fine violins, violas and cellos for the past 40 years since graduating from the Newark School of Violin Making. I use traditional methods established by the great Italian masters such as Stradivari and Guarneri.
My early career was as a maker and repairer in Essex. In the late 90’s I took the decision to stop repair work and concentrate exclusively on new making. This has given me the freedom to develop my making skills, my design and my sound. Though initially difficult, it was for me the right decision. I soon became known for making great instruments that really worked for players. This was highlighted when I sold a viola to Caroline Harrison who was at the time the co-principal of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. A steady stream of orders from many orchestral musicians soon followed.
In 2004 I moved here, to South West France, where I have established my workshop. I travel frequently throughout Europe to meet with musicians to show my work and let them try my instruments
The instruments are made to the highest quality using tools and methods that were used by the masters of the golden age in Cremona. They are greatly influenced by those of that period but with the addition of my own unique subtle style.
My instruments are varnished using natural resins, oils and pigments. They are finished with a patina that gives them a slightly aged look allowing them to blend in well in the orchestra.
Each Instrument optimised for its sound and playability. I am always happy to work with the player to fine-tune the instrument to suit their individual requirements.
I enjoy all stages in making an instrument from selecting the wood to setting up the finished violin and to the delight of hearing its voice for the first time.
A few examples of my work are usually available for trial, but this is not always possible. If you would like to arrange to view and try an instrument please do not hesitate to contact me. I am always happy to undertake commissions and promise that I will give it my best attention. This will produce an instrument designed to suit your needs perfectly.
